Inflation surges to 10-year high
Surging food prices drove the consumer price index (CPI) to 5.6 percent in July -- the highest in a decade -- the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said yesterday. But analysts remained confident that it will ease by the year end.

China's stock market still on the up, major index close to 5,000 points
Investors in the Chinese stock market have turned a blind eye to the country's highest monthly consumer price index in ten years and the mortgage crisis in the United States, propelling the major index to a new high on Tuesday. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 52.72 points, or 1.09 percent, to 4,872.79 points, closing in on the 5,000-point mark. The Shenzhen Component Index on the smaller stock exchange rose 235.78 points, or 1.46 percent, to 16,351.89 points...

China puts new curbs on processing trade to address trade imbalance
China announced a new policy that seeks to curb the development of process trade in labor-intensive industries, in a bid to reduce its ever rising trade surplus. The new policy, to take effect on August 23, shall cover 1,853 products in plastics, furniture and textiles and other labor-intensive industries...
China to adjust export refund policy
Starting from July 1, China will implement a new export refund policy for about 2,800 types of goods. These goods make up 37% of the total number of goods that are subject to tax by the China Customs office. Of all these goods, 553 are regarded as high energy-consumption, high polluting, and high resource-consumption goods, most of them being mineral and chemical goods...
China on the move to improve food safety
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said on Friday that China would strengthen exchanges and cooperation with other countries to cope with the issue of food safety "in a responsible way" at a national work meeting in Beijing.
